It could be caused by blown head gaskets, weak piston rings or valve train issues. To enable combustion on any cylinder, your engine needs to have air, fuel, and a properly timed spark. Without any of these three factors, it will surely result in a misfire. If you see the trouble code P or cylinder 4 misfire detected, there must be some missing factors from the combustion process and you must find out what it is.
To diagnose the trouble code P you need to prepare some tools like an OBD2 scan tool, fuel pressure gauge, digital multimeter, compression tester, and a leakdown tester. Follow these steps to determine what causes the trouble code to set off. A faulty fuel pump, failed fuel pressure regulator, or clogged fuel filter can be the culprit of the trouble code if it is confirmed that there is low fuel pressure. Symptoms of a cylinder 4 misfire might include check engine light on, lacking or losing power, hard starting, poor performance, strange-smelling emissions, and shaking when the engine is on.
If you have a cylinder 4 misfire detected or a P code but you are not experiencing any symptom, you can clear the trouble code and do a test drive. If the trouble code was set off again after clearing it, follow the steps below to help you fix the problem.
Little preventative measures can go a long way in preventing cylinder misfires. You can check all the hoses in your system for leaks regularly. This is because misfires are usually caused by air-to-fuel mixture issues. Using the wrong fuel can also trigger misfires. It is better that you stick to a fuel that has the grade recommended for your engine. Remember that a misfiring cylinder is a serious problem. Although a cylinder 4 misfire still enables you to drive to a safe location, it is recommended that you have it fixed as soon as possible.
Driving with a misfiring cylinder is not safe under any condition. Now, if you are thinking what causes a cylinder misfire, well, it is the bad spark plugs or the imbalanced air or fuel mixture, which is responsible for the misfiring a cylinder.
Can I drive my car with a cylinder 4 misfire? Driving with a misfire isn't safe and can damage your engine. What does misfire on cylinder 4 mean? P indicates that cylinder number 4 is experiencing misfires. A misfire occurs when an insufficient amount of fuel is burning in a cylinder. The efficient burning of fuel is essential to engine operation as the combustion of fuel is what provides the energy to power the engine. How long can you drive with a bad spark plug?
You can typically get 80, miles on them before they need replacing. But if you notice any of these symptoms, it's time to get your spark plugs checked out with an engine tune-up. Continuing to drive with worn out or damaged spark plugs can ultimately cause engine damage, so don't put it off. Normally inline four cylinder engines have only one bank. Did all old plugs look the same? Well that makes alot more sense to me then. So there is a very good possibity the misfire code on cylinder number 4 could be from a faulty injector that corrosponds to that cyclinder.
I will have to look at the plugs this eve to see how they look. I had originally changed the plugs when this issue started but did not see any indication of it running rich My last question is where is number 4 cylinder located. I am assuming the on nearest the drivers side? Macs New Member. You must log in or sign up to post here.
