How did he deal with competition? What happened to his businesses? No amount of keep working harder is going to take you to the next level. Choice and your circumstances So much knowledge packed in this little book of stories. No matter what the odds it's always worth pressing into the challenge. And making the best of our circumstances. Sep 16, Daniel rated it it was amazing. Really good book. It was a requirement in my Entrepreneurship class and it's already inspired me.

I recommend that everyone who's been thinking about starting a business or is having difficulty starting up to read this book. Oct 16, Lucid rated it liked it. So, the book laid out a pretty solid foundation of lessons to consider when it comes to entrepreneurship.

However, the problem I had with it was the repetition and the fact that it did not delve into hardships further than a sentence or two. There was no real vocalization of thoughts and troubles to really relate. It read my an inspirational speech and not a book. It was inspiring, but it was also spewing common knowledge the same. The formula is, work hard and you will succeed. If you fail, try So, the book laid out a pretty solid foundation of lessons to consider when it comes to entrepreneurship.

If you fail, try again. Don't stop the pursuit of success and aim high. Essentially, the lines we are constantly fed to push ourselves. The problem here lies in the fact that it doesn't address the problems that weigh us back. Sure, fear is one factor but that is the one thing it constantly addresses. What about stress? What about what it may do to health? How do you overcome that? That is what bothered me about this read. For something so motivational and well written, it failed to be relatable.

I felt like I was being lectured. Sure, some parts were definitely inspirational, but how am I suppose to go beyond the suggestions if I do not understand how problems faced were actually dealt with? It was an okay read. Just okay. For pages, this could have been delivered for half the amount if it wasn't for the fact lines were constantly repeated.

I understand repetition is suppose to help the user absorb that knowledge, but it felt like a take away when it is repeated in another way later down the road. Apr 09, Sarah rated it liked it. Read this book for an Entrepreneurial Mindset Training pilot course ahead of my fellow business librarian's grant curriculum she is helping facilitate.

I have admittedly limited entrepreneurial zeal outside of wanting to own a brewery and an independent press, and I was still left feeling hopeful about how something like starting a business could be accomplished by the end of the book.

The stories Clifton shares and all he learned from his Uncle Cleve's living example also laid bare what examples my family members set for me, good and bad. I hope and think I have, thankfully, carried on with more of the good than the bad: Be helpful whenever you can, Have fun, and Don't be an asshole were the basic tenets of my family.

Pretty distilled and comprehensive if you ask me. Well done to Uncle Cleve. I cheer on your spirit indefinitely, sir. Jun 09, Joe Keefhaver rated it liked it. The author tells the story of life lessons he learned working for his Uncle Cleve at his ice house.

Cleve is a black entrepreneur in a segregated Mississippi town where most African-Americans are field hands. The parts of the book about working for Uncle Cleve are interesting. They do offer some insights into how to be successful when things are stacked against you. But the inserted commentary by co-author Gary Schoeniger is unnecessary, and the overall effect is to make it a weak effort for the motivational genre.

Oct 08, Doug added it. A great short read. The book and class are highly recommended. The book discusses eight core beliefs of the entrepreneur. Also the book and class are not just business oriented although that is a major thrust.

The major emphasis goes beyond business and money and how the entrepreneurial mindset is a way of life for all regardless of their career or place in life.

From page Entrepreneurship is a mindset, It is a mindset that can empower ordinary people to create extraordinary lives. It is a mindset that exposes opportunity and ignites ambition. It is a mindset that fosters innovation and initiative curiosity and lifelong learning, as well as the self-reliance and resourcefulness of which we are all capable.

Nov 14, Joshua Lawson rated it liked it Shelves: entrepreneurship. There were some helpful insights in this book, but nothing truly outstanding. I'm feeling like different person I've read a lot books on entrepreneurship, but this book is my personal strong recommendation to all aspiring entrepreneurs. Jul 09, Morgan Crabtree rated it liked it. The is an extremely important book. The lessons are valuable and the stories powerful.

The stories are instructive in themselves, and I found the italicized commentary after to be repetitive and pedantic. That said, this is a book I think all people should read, especially anyone wanting to change their legacy. Just maybe skim those italicized portions. May 07, Winder Library added it. Recommended to me as a non-fiction read of an interesting man. I'm not an entrepreneur and you don't have to be either to enjoy this thought provoking book. The eight lessons are big words like choice, action and persistence.

Personal past and present brought together make a very interesting read. Not a long book but powerful. Feb 14, Salvatore Farieri rated it it was amazing.

An amazing and inspiring story of a boy living during a time of legal segregation who developed an entrepreneurial mindset from his Uncle Cleve who owned the Ice House in a town in Mississippi. Mindset is everything when pursuing entrepreneurship and the lessons Uncle Cleve teaches are ones that can be applied to this generation. This is a great read for those seeking entrepreneurship. Jan 05, Anh rated it it was amazing. I came across this book when I was struggling to get my first job.

At that time, I felt kind of demotivated and did not know which directions to go. After reading this book again and again, I felt motivated by how people knew what to do with their lives and getting many great pieces of advice.

Just pages and because it is not too detailed, so that you finish it in two days and remain with that bitter aftertaste waiting for something sweeter that isn't there Poorly written, child-like descriptions of memory. The eight life lessons are fine, but I bet I could find eight stories from my life to apply those chapter headings to.

This book is a bloated pamphlet. Sep 10, Andy Hausmann rated it it was amazing Shelves: entrepreneurship. A MUST read for any entrepreneur, whether you are an inspiring entrepreneur are already one. This book will probably never get the credit it deserves and it was a truly great read! Feb 21, Erich Thalacker rated it liked it. Simple thoughts on the basics of entrepreneurism. Apr 22, Amanda rated it it was amazing Shelves: business.

Required reading Sep 15, Brett Blair rated it it was amazing. Oct 06, Teri Temme rated it it was amazing. As poverty continues to increase all across rural America, this book provides anyone who might listen a way out.

This book needs taught in every High School in America. A true story of grit, strength, and perseverance helping you to rise above expectations and create your own path. Education for the soul. Gives purpose driven people an opportunity to see themselves without the distraction. Loved it. The narrators were great. I could seenj7st what they spoke. I'd suggest the audio if teaching the class that goes with the book.

Literally, this is a collection of powerful quotes and wisdom derived from life-time journey. I enjoyed listening to it, taking notes along the way. I could vividly see those cotton fields, the areas pictured in the book, those proud moments of dignity and choices. I appreciated the summary of key points at the closure of each chapter.

It helped focus on core entrepreneurship concepts and compare notes too. This book would be so good for anyone who feels stuck, does not feel strength to move forward, has fears about the present and future or is found In a wrong place with wrong people. It made me feel so good about the changes I pursued in my life, knowing where I want to be and who should be my close circle of friends. It will take me some time to digest more of the book as I keep on my own entrepreneurial journey.

What I gathered is that things happens to those who make them happen by hard work, knowledge, effort, action, response rather than reaction, perseverance, and determination. Thank you so much! Redundant and over use of the word entrepreneur, Historic presentation of a hustler that lifted himself up and those around him.

Was hailed as a breakthrough novel in a recent entrepreneur class, maybe intended for a younger generation that hasn't had to hustle themselves or tried to bring a dream to life. Entropy and redundancy but honestly, not enough entropy. In my honest opinion it felt like a summarized mash up of think and grow rich. Perseverance, positive attitude etc etc etc. I would recommend it though but better suited for someone just starting out.
