The smallest region of Spain is the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands only cover a total area of 1, square miles; however, it has three times the amount of population as the next largest region in Spain. The Balearic Islands are located off the Mediterranean coast of Spain, giving the archipelago the typical Mediterranean climate. The city of Ibiza, which is still one of the largest cities in the Balearic Islands today, was founded in BC by the Carthaginians.
The Carthaginians were a western ancient Carthage culture that settled in many areas throughout the Mediterranean. They civilized the Balearic Islands until their fall in BC. After their fall in BC, the Romans entered the islands and civilized different areas of the archipelago. The Romans ruled the islands until the s AD when Germanic tribes invaded the islands and took control over the Romans. Shortly thereafter, around AD, the Romans were able to take the islands back and maintain control until the Muslim invaded in This time period was known as the Muslim Invasion.
During the Muslim Invasion, Muslims from the middle east moved westward, conquering any and every area along the way. During the s, the Balearic Islands were constantly a target of attacks from Ottoman pirates from North Africa. During these raids, the towns were destroyed, and around 4, civilians were taken as prisoners.
The easternmost island, Menorca, became part of Britain after the Treaty of Utrecht was signed in The signing of this treaty meant that the Spanish island of Menorca, as well as the Spanish city of Gibraltar, were given to the Kingdom of Great Britain in return for peace in the area. The problem is that at the time of our research the flights were very expensive. In short, it was while browsing on Skyscanner that we found a good offer for a flight.
Menorca we didn't know much about it. We knew where it was, we knew that Mallorca and Ibiza were too touristic for our taste but nothing more A couple of Google Image searches later, we we were already booking our flights! Car rental is probably the easiest and most comfortable way to visit Menorca. And the good news in this regard is that the price of rentals is quite reasonable. To rent a car we advise you to test Rentalcars. Rentalcars is not a rental agency strictly speaking but a comparator!
If an agency closes its doors at say 8pm and you want to return at 8. However, by talking to the agency it is often possible to make arrangements! In Menorca itself, and especially in tourist areas, you will also find many agencies directly on the streets and you can easily rent a car on the spot.
In our case, we never did so because the prices found online were systematically lower than those observed on spot. When we rent a car we generally prefer to ignore additional insurance which is often more expensive than the rental itself and prefer to pay a deposit.
We knock on wood, but for the moment we have never had a problem during a rental. See on Rentalcars. Find all our recommandations on hotels in Menorca in our detailed budget blog post.
