The big 4th wall break came when Axel called himself out in front of Xemnas during the Keyblade war. He knows he has "loads of people rooting" for him, so shove it Xemnas! Even if his Keyblade isn't the strongest, fans love Axel and he is all too aware of it. Kinda creepy but also amazing that Nomura was willing to have a bit more fun with this character. Of all the shining moments Axel has had up until this point, his snarky comeback to Xemnas sealed him as a continuing character for games to come.

While he doesn't outwardly feel, the loss of his friends still affects him greatly, even as he reawakens as Lea and is no longer a Nobody.
The two develop a strong connection, fueled by their shared history as people who have lost many friends. Lea never stopped thinking about those close to him, and he held out hope that he would reunite with his friends again.
Much like Sora, Lea knows that his strength lies in his friends and the memories they share. Lea's love for his friends burns like the fires that form his keyblade and, eventually, his hopes become reality. Lea is reunited with Isa at the end of the game as they all share ice cream together.
